North Portland Real Estate

Seems even in a lousy market the right place to be is in North Portland.  Thing for me is that I believe most of that growth is over off of Mississippi and Alberta area's and not in the St Johns area where I am sitting.  Don't get me wrong I am happy over here but I don't think it is the same appreciation.  Wish I could find a good breakout of St Johns over the rest of North Portland.

Portland Real Estate

There are a lot of opinions out there on what is happening in the Real Estate markets.  I think if you are in Clark County, Clackamas County and outer Washington County your market is and has been hurting for awhile (relative to other Portland metro areas, nothing like California, Nevada, Florida).

Things seem to be holding up okay in my neck of the woods (North Portland) even still seeing rolling 12 month appreciation.  My house was recently refinanced and appraised much better than I had anticipated.  Appraised and Sell For can be two different things but I am sure appraisals are much more strict and conservative now than they were 2 years ago.

All may not be lost.  I expect a bottom in Portland real estate around the end of 2009 with a uptick for spring 2010.  We shall see.

Teddy Roosevelt Republicans Abandonded!!!

Yup I said it.  And so did Vangaurd founder and life long Republican John Bogle.  He is one of several high finance types backing Obama.  Three former SEC Chairman, John Bogle founder of Vanguard, Paul Volcker former Fed Chief.  All Republicans backing Obama.

Why?

Well to qoute one.  What good are Republicans if they cannot slow spending?  Oh they can cut taxes to all hell but turns out they spend just as much as the next guy.  The whole debt bubble, credit crisis, built on deregulation and massive amounts of debt.  That is what the Republican party seems to stand for these days.  That and invading your personal space to tell you who you can and cannot love, marry, what you can do with your own body and when you can and cannot die.

People are worried about government invading their space?  Is there anything more invasive than what the Republicans and their Christian conservative base stand for?  Stay out of my life you a holes.

True Demo's what more regulation than I might like but at least they are just about as Libertarian as you would want when it comes to social issues and really that is what impacts my life the most day to day.

Free Market or Free to screw everyone till the Gov bails you out.

Republicans seem to be all for the Free Market and not letting the government intrude with regulations.  Maybe if the Fed, OTCC, SEC had done their job regulating banks, hedge funds, brokerages, lenders we would not be in this mess.  Instead let the free market reign into a frenzy of knowledgeable specialists taking advantage of the naive and trusting out there.  Now all the shit is hitting the fan and guess what?  All those free marketeers want/need bailouts from the govt.

What about all the execs and managers who have collected fat bonuses over the last 8 years?  Make them pay it back or put the assholes in jail.

Instead the gov will gaurantee the buyout of Bear Stearns by JPM.  The Fed also opens lending windows for brokerage houses that got too greedy in the marketing of SIV's and now the last straw?  Looks like Freddi and Fannie are in deep shit and they want us to bail them out.  Trillions... my friends.  If this shit goes down the economy is going to tank like you cannot believe.

It was a credit crisis that caused the great depression.  While I do not believe we are headed for a depression it could be one hell of a recession.

Conservative? Christian? Hero of the Republican Party?

All these men were celebrated that way on their passing....

Senator Jesse Helms, Senator Strom Thurmond, Govenor Lester Maddox.

Exactly why this party is now only favored by 36% of the population and losing more people like me all the time.  Add Racist, and Bigot to the tag lines for these men.  They leave nothing to be honored and history will show them in a long line of people on the wrong side of history fighting for the wrong values.  They days they died were days to smile with joy.

Rockefeller Republicans for Obama!!

I recently decided I had to do something to help change the way things were going, to not just sit back and watch elections or vote my single vote but try to help move the cause.  I have been what I would term a Progressive Rockefeller Republican most of my life.  But the GOP does not reflect me or my values any longer.  I feel we progressive Republicans marginalized since 1981 are ashamed of the GOP. It is now the party which conducts wars based on lies, announces to the world that the USA will invade any nation for any reason at any time, promotes torture, trashes our revered Constitution, spies on loyal Americans, redirects our tax monies to religious groups, targets a sexual minority to win elections, champions an anti-science agenda, and has made our nation so despised abroad.

I want to be part of a generational JFK, RFK, MLK moment.  I want to help make the change.  I have never donated a dime to a political party in my life.  But this year I am going to do so and not only that I am going to see whom I can get to follow me and help me reach a goal of donating as much as possible.

If you want to help you can do so by following the link below to my donation page and making a donation to our Future and for Obama in 08.  Thank you!

Existential Space Opera's and Australian Cowboys With a bit of Homegrown

Whew.... I have seen a few good movies recently.  So after seeing "Stalker" I wanted to see another Russian Soviet Era piece and I went back to the same director and what appears to be his response to Kubrick's "2001: A Space Odyssey".  The only space faring nations locked in a mortal global Cold War across the planet and space at a time when there was great hope about our future in space (40 years and barely a return to the moon has kind of been the buzz kill on that one...) and they come out with two visions of our future in space.  Vaguely similiar but also starkly different.  Kubrick's stark cold technological piece vs Tarkovsky's more organic humanistic piece.

I love both.  I had seen the Solaris remake and while not this movie it had piqued me enough to see the original.  If you like Kubrick I think you will like this.

Tarkovsky - Solaris

Next a Australian Cowboy movie set in the 1800's Australian Outback.  Great movie even if you do not like westerns you are almost gauranteed to love this character study.  Guy Pierce is an excellent lead, Nick Cave brings a little Old/New Testament redemption to the characters.  Overall a beautiful film.  The Proposition

The Proposition - Trailer

And let's finish with a little home grown crabby' old guy humor with family and personal redemption.  Grumpy Old Men meets Oregon meets independent film.  Funny and wothe the watch.  Raising Flagg:

Tarkovsky - Stalker

I think I started out being interested in this film as it was filmed at the height of the cold war and being old enough to even remember the cold war I was curious what type of film was being made in the Soviet Union while we were supposed to be hating them so much.

Simply wonderful.

Stalker demands effort to watch. It asks profound questions about humanity, metaphysics, and a wide range of issues while doing so with fantastic visuals. In addition it asks you, the viewer to question yourself. The concept of the movie is brilliant, simply a masterpiece. Be forewarned, it is SLOW... If you watch movies purely for entertainment Stalker is not for you. If you seek a movie that some might consider "Art", then have some coffee at hand sit back and enjoy.
